High Street (Oakham)

[An image showing High Street]The High Street is the main street of Oakham, the very pleasant county town of Rutland.

Most of the major shops are in this street, which was the birthplace of two notables.

The picturesque Jeffery Hudsons Cottage was the birthplace of this tiny little adventurer, believed to have been the inspiration for the Tom Thumb stories, in 1619.

Titus Oates, who invented the Popish Plot, alleged to be an attempt by Catholics to assassinate the King and his Ministers and take over the country, was born in the High Street, on the site of a house which now sports an elegant sundial.

The Market Place leads off the High Street, and in turn leads to Oakham Castle.
