Inveraray Castle (Inveraray)

Inverary Castle is an impressive castle at Inveraray in Argyll.

It was built in 1745 by the Duke of Argyll, although there had been earlier fortresses in the area.

The Duke is head of Clan Campbell and his family have lived at Inveraray since the 15th century.

The present castle, with its fairytale look, was designed by Roger Morris and decorated by Robert Mylne.

The Armoury Hall contains some 1300 pievces, including muskets, axes and broadswords.

The castle replaced the original town of Inverarary. The new town was laid out by the castle`s Clerk of Works, William Adam, father of the more famous Robert and John.
