Market Square (Ely)

The Market Square is the shopping focal point of the delightful little cathedral city of Ely, in Cambridgeshire.

It becomes very busy of course on market days, Thursdays and Saturdays, and is also the venue for Ely's May Fair and the Etheldreda Fair, held in October.

The Square is situated at the East end of the High Street, where it becomes Fore Hill and drops down to the Riverside, and also at the East end of Market Street.

To the South of the Market Square are the precincts of Ely Cathedral, and to the North, past an excellent fish and chip shop and restaurant, there is a modern pedestrianised shopping area, including the Public Library.

The Town Hall, demolished during the 20th century, was situated on the West side.

Ely's original Market Square was past the other end of the High Street, where there is now a lovely green beside St. Marys Church and Oliver Cromwells House.
