St. Marys Church (Ely)

St. Marys is the parish church serving the delightful little cathedral city and market town of Ely, in Cambridgeshire.

It stands beside the timber framed Oliver Cromwells House, which was once its Rectory, in front of an attractive green.

At the other end of a larger green close by is the magnificent Ely Cathedral, and the Old Bishops Palace.

St. Marys has much work in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, and there is a particularly fine North doorway.

The church has a memorial to the men executed in the aftermath of the Littleport riots of 1816. They were protesting against the draining of the Fens. Five were hanged, and several others transported.
