Kingsgate

Kingsgate is a district of the Isle of Thanet in Kent, midway between Broadstairs and Margate.

There are outstanding, but not well enough known, chalk cliffs, including the spectacular Whiteness.

It has an extraordinary collection of follies, remanants of even more constructed for Lord Holland, the father of Charles James Fox, in the 18th century.

Kingsgate Castle, on the edge of the cliff, was built in the 1860s.

Hackemdown Tower, one of Lord Holland`s follies, is supposed to be a memorial to a battle between the English and the Danes.

The Whitfield Tower was a cloumn on the highest point in Thanet. It collapsed in a gale in the late 1970s.

The North Foreland Lighthouse has a short tower of a brilliant white. It was built in the 17th century and heightened a century later.
