Winchester Castle (Winchester)

Winchester Castle was an important castle at the ancient city of Winchester, but only a little survives today.

The original castle was built by William the Conqueror, but was burnt down in 1141. Its replacement was the scene of the Empress Matilda`s rescue by the Earl of Gloucester and sixty men during her Civil War against King Stephen. She was hidden in a coffin.

Her son Henry III was born at the castle, and caused the castle to be rebuilt when he had become king.

The Great Hall remains, as well as some stone ruins nearby which have recently been opened to the public. The Great Hall may be visited, and contains the famous Round Table.
