North Gate (Salisbury)

The North Gate is a prominent building in Salisbury.

It is one of the four gates guarding the entrance to Salisbury Cathedral, and is situated at the end of the High Street.

This fine gate dates from the 14th century.

It formerly had a portcullis, which was very useful when the Bishop and his clergy were on unfriendly terms with he citizens.
