St. Peter`s Church (Northampton)

St. Peter`s Church is one of the interesting churches in the historic market town of Northampton.

It is situated in Mayorhold, on the edge of the town centre close to Northampton Station.

The church is mostly Norman, but is on the site of the original Anglo-Saxon church which served the early town. Nearby was a Royal palace, and the motte of the Norman castle remains beside the station.

The tower is fairly short but the nave is unusually long, in fact constituting an early type of church in which there is no distinction between nave and chancel.

There is almost continuous blind arcading along the tower and clerestory.

The pier capitals are outstanding, with carvings of faces and animals. The font dates from the 14th century.

St. Peter`s is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
