All Saints Church (Maidstone)

All Saints is the parish church of Maidstone in Kent.

It is a very large church, overlooking the River Medway, and is said to have the widest nave in England.

It was built as a collegiate church in 1395 by William Courtenay, Archbishop of Canterbury.

There are a number of interesting memorials. Among these are one to Laurence Washington, great uncle of George Washington, the first United States President.

Another is to Sir Jacob Astley, noted for his prayer before the Battle of Newbury. "Lord, Thou knowest I shall be very busy this day. If I forget Thee, do not Thou forget me, Amen."

In the chancel are four sedilia, unusually all on the same level.
