Jew`s House (Lincoln)

The Jew`s House is an ancient building in the historic cathedral city of Lincoln.

One of only a few stone houses in the country dating from the Norman period, it is situated in the Strait, the steep thoroughfare which leads down from the old centre, around Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle, down into the present day city centre.

The Jew`s House was built about 1170. Its ornate entrance arch also served the synagogue.

The Jews, having become wealthy and powerful, were expelled from Lincoln in the late 13th century, amid much anti-Semitic feeling, fuelled by tales such as the fabricated story of Little St. Hugh, who was said to have been a child ritually murdered by the Jewish community.

Today, the Jew`s House has been restored, and is used as a restaurant and a bookshop.
