Erasmus Darwin House (Lichfield)

Erasmus Darwin House is one of the most significant buildings in the historic cathedral city of Lichfield.

It can be found in Beacon Street, and is also accessible through passageways from opposite Lichfield Cathedral.

The house was the 18th century home of the genius Erasmus Darwin, grandfather of Charles Darwin, who is much better known today.

Erasmus Darwin lived from1731 to 1802. He was a doctor, philosopher, inventor, botanist and poet. Together with his friends, including Josiah Wedgwood, Matthew Boulton and James Watt, he was a founder of the Lunar Society, which met on nights of the full moon, making attendance easier.

This fascinating house was opened to the public in 1999.
