St. Peter`s Church (Leeds (Yorkshire))

St. Peter`s Church is the parish church of the major city of Leeds (Yorkshire).

There was a mediaeval church on the site, but by the 19th century it had fallen into a state of semi-dereliction.

When Dean Walter Hook arrived as the new Vicar in 1837, he decided that a new St. Peter`s should be built. He raised the cost himself and commissioned Dennis Chantrell as architect.

Hook refounded the choir, obtained an 18th century organ form Bristol and brought in the eminent organist Samuel Wesley from Exeter.

Near the sanctuary stands a tall Anglo-Saxon cross.

There is a reredos by G. E. Street and a marble font by William Butterfield.
