George Vancouver Statue (Kings Lynn)

The George Vancouver Statue stands on the waterfront in the historic Norfolk town of Kings Lynn.

It can be found close to Henry Bell's elegant Custom House on Purfleet Quay.

George Vancouver was a famous son of Kings Lynn, whose father and brother were both employed in the Custom House.

He was born in 1757 at a house behind the old Friends' Meeting House in New Conduit Street and died in 1798, having had an eminently sucessful career as a maritime explorer.

Sailing early in life with Captain Cook, he went on to chart 5000 miles of the coast of North America.

The Canadian city of Vancouver is named after him.
