Glasgow University is one of the oldest universities in Britain. It is situated in Glasgow.

The main building was designed in the 19th century by George Gilbert Scott. It has a frontage of over 500 feet and a spire which rises to 300 feet.

Glasgow University was founded in 1451. Bishop Turnbull, who had been largely responsible for its foundation, became the first principal. Classes were first held in the crypt of Glasgow Cathedral, but in the High Street from a few years later.

The university moved to its present site in 1870.
