Eastbourne Pier (Eastbourne)

Eastbourne Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institution.

It is situated at Eastbourne on the Sussex coast, pointing out into the English Channel.

The pier is the work of the pier specialist Eugenius Burton, opened in 1870 and completed in 1872.

In 1888, a 400 seater theatre was opened. This was replaced in 1901 by a 1000 seater building. The earlier theatre was removed to Lewes and became a cowshed.

In subsequent years, a camera obscura and a music pavilion, later to become a ballroom and still later an amusement arcade, were added.

A camera obsura was restored to the pier in 2003.

Eastbourne Pier was voted Pier of the Year in 1997.
