Time Ball Tower (Deal)

The Time Ball Tower is a fascinating building on the seafront at Deal in Kent.

Because sailors needed to know the time, the tower was built in 1854, with a massive ball which could slide up and down a pole on the roof.

It was hoisted to the top, and at precisely 1pm Greenwich Mean Time, it dropped.

The ball still serves this function, but is now controlled electrically from Greenwich.
