Great Churchyard (Bury St. Edmunds)

The Great Churchyard is an atmospheric area in the historic old town of Bury St. Edmunds.

On land once occupied by the great Abbey, the churchyard lies between Bury St. Edmunds Cathedral and St. Marys Church, with the lovely Abbey Park and Abbey Ruins behind.

In the Great Churchyard is the ruined Chapel of the Charnel. This unusually large chancel house was built before 1300, and held bones dug up to make way for fresh burials.

After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Chapel of the Charnel was used as a private house, a blacksmiths and even a pub.
