Cliff Railway (Bridgnorth)

The Cliff Railway in the fascinating old Shropshire town of Bridgnorth is the only inland funicular railway in England. The others are at seaside resorts.

Otherwise known as the Castle Hill Railway, it features two cable cars linking High Town with Low Town beside the River Severn. They are linked by cable for safety, and as one is ascending the other is descending.

There are other ways to walk up the red sandstone cliff, but this is the most convenient. It has a gradient of 2 in 3, the steepest in the land.

The Cliff Railway was constructed in 1892. It is 201 feet long, and has a gauge of 3 ft 8 ins.

It runs a continuous service every day, for a modest fare.
