Weybridge

Weybridge is an old town in Surrey, 4 miles from Esher. It stands where the River Wey joins the River Thames.

This may well be the site where Julius Caesar crossed the Thames in 55BC.

St. Mary`s Church was largely rebuilt in 1848. It has a 15th century tower and an impressively tall spire.

Oatlands Palace was built by Henry VIII, using masonry from several local monasteries. He married Catherine Howard at the palace.Its remains are surrounded by a housing estate.

Brooklands was the world`s first motor racing circuit, and was later used for aircraft construction. Barnes Wallis worked there. It is now a museum featuring both.

A column on Monument Hill commemorates a former Duchess of York. It was brought here in 1822 from Seven Dials in London.

There is a splendid iron bridge across the Wey.

At St. George`s Hill there are ancient defensive works.

Brookwood Cemetery is one of the largest in the world.

Conductor Colin Davis and author Richard Hughes were born in Weybridge.
