Tonbridge

Tonbridge is a pleasant old town on the River Medway in Kent, 6 miles from Sevenoaks.

The old town is dominated by the Gatehouse of Tonbridge Castle, which dated from Norman times, when it was built by Richard de Clare, but was demolished during the Civil War. It now stands in landscaped gardens.

St. Peter and St. Paul Church is largely Early English.

The Chequers Inn dates from the 16th century, and the Port Reeve`s House from the 15th century.

Tonbridge School was founded in 1553. Jane Austen`s father taught here.

Prominent people born at Tonbridge include Harry Andrews, actor; and Frank Woolley, England cricketer.

Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby is available to lead Guided Walks around Tonbridge for groups.
