Thurcaston

Thurcaston is a small village in Leicestershire, 4 miles from Leicester and on the edge of Charnwood Forest.

Latimer's House is a splendid 15th century cruck framed house.

It may be the birthplace of Hugh Latimer, who was certainly born in the village about 1485. He rose to be Bishop of Worcester, but was burned at the stake, alongside Nicholas Ridley, under the persecutions of Mary I in 1555.

Latimer and Ridley were burned at Oxford, and the Martyrs Memorial is to honour them and Cranmer.

All Saints Church has in its churchyard a very old gravestone, made of the local Swithland slate. It is to Elias Travers, the Rector of Thurcaston, who died in 1641.

Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby is available to lead Guided Walks around Thurcaston for groups.
