Swarkestone

Swarkestone is a village in Derbyshire, 5 miles from Derby.

The 13th century seven arch bridge and mile long causeway over the River Trent are said to have been built by two sisters whose sweethearts had been lost in the river.

This was the point, a little beyond Derby, where in 1745 Charles Edward Stuart`s army, with London at its mercy, turned back for Scotland.

In the grounds of 17th century Swarkestone Hall is a bowling pavilion by John Smythson.

Nearby is the Trent and Mersey Canal.
