Edwinstowe

Edwinstowe is a village in Nottinghamshire, 2 miles from Ollerton and at the heart of Sherwood Forest.

The name means "the holy place of St. Edwin", who was the King of Northumbria.

The 13th century parish church is reputed to be the site of the wedding of Robin Hood and Maid Marian.

Just outside the village is the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre, in a country park which includes walks to the enormous 900-year-old Major Oak, where Robin's Merrie Men are said to have hidden.

Dr. Ebenezer Brewer, compiler of the famous Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, spent his last few years at Edwinstowe.
