Atherton
Atherton is an industrial town in Greater Manchester (formerly Lancashire), 4 miles from Bolton.
The main industries were once cotton and coal. Present factories produce Dorma bedding and Barrs soft drinks.
Chowbent Chapel, with a three decker pulpit, dates from 1721.
Ena Mill, a former cotton mill, is now a well known retail outlet.
Nigel Short, chess grandmaster, was born at Atherton.
