Essex Tour (A Coach Trip in Essex)

The “Essex Tour” is a Coach Trip devised and led by Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritager Tours, the Leicester-based Blue Badge Guide who runs these excursions throughout the year.

Colin's excursions are an enjoyable way of learning some Local History.

The coach leaves St. Margarets Bus Station in Leicester at 8am, and returns about 9.30pm.

Colin will be giving his usual commentary along the way, which is an even more pleasant duty for him than usual, as Essex is his home county – he was born in Rochford.

Essex is a beautiful county, with some of the loveliest countryside and most photogenic towns and villages in England.

There are three stops, of approximately an hour each.

Saffron Walden is an old market town with hundreds of listed buildings, a ruined castle and a rare turf maze. The town gained its prosperity through being the centre for growing the saffron crocus, which gives a yellow-orange dye.

Halstead is another old market town connected with the beginning of the Courtauld company. A weatherboarded mill on the River Colne is now an antiques centre. Colin was formerly Manager of the cinema in Halstead.

Maldon has a beautiful setting at the head of the Blackwater estuary, and is famous for sea salt production, the Battle of Maldon in 991 and the unique All Saints Church with its triangular tower.

There is an additional stop at Finchingfield, England’s most photographed village, which has appeared on countless calendars and Beautiful Britain books.
