Disaster Hits Weston-super-Mare

A huge fire broke out on the Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare on 28th July.

The fire started around 7.15 am, and within minutes the partly wooden structure was well alight.

Seaside piers are a much loved institution in England, but many have been hit by disasters, and the number still extant around the country has greatly diminished.

The Weston-super-Mare fire happened on the 32nd anniversary of a devastating fire on the most famous of them all, Southend Pier. But after a series of catastrophes, this one is still in operation.

The Grand Pier was opened in 1904. Its owners, who are naturally upset, insist that they will do all they can to rebuild and reopen the pier.

People around the country, especially those of us who come from beside the sea, will send their best wishes for a speedy restoration.
