A Day at the Races

For the first time in my life, I went to a racecourse recently to actually see a race meeting.

It was at Newmarket, which Charles II established as the headquarters of horseracing in the 17th century. I had been invited by the Newmarket Experience, and my wife Anne and I were delighted to accept.

We went by train, changing at Cambridge, and walked to the rcecourse from the station. It was a long walk, but during the afternoon we discovered that there is a free bus service to and from the station.

We enjoyed the day, being taken out to the starting point to witness the start of one race, having various aspects explained to us and watching the end of a number of other races.

The hospitality was excellent, with high tea included. The organisers went out of their way to make us welcome, and deserve to be successful.
