Cromwell Country Tour (A Coach Trip in Cambridgeshire)

"Cromwell Country Tour" is one of the many fascinating Coach Trips devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.

These excursions are an excellent way of soaking up some Local History.

This tour is around the area on the edge of the Fens which was home to Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of England in the period when we had no King.

The coach departs from St. Margarets Bus Station in Leicester City Centre at 8am, and is due back about 9pm.

Along the way, Colin gives his customary commentary, bringing to life the interesting sights and places encountered on the route, in a way which makes his trips quite unique.

There are three stops, each of about an hour. These three towns are all in Cambridgeshire, and are all on the banks of the River Great Ouse. At different periods Cromwell lived in each town.

Huntingdon is where Cromwell was born. There is a museum in the Norman building where he had his schooling, and there is a fine mediaeval bridge over the river.

St. Ives (Cambridgeshire) is a busy market town with a statue of Cromwell on Market Hill. There is a rare chapel on the bridge over the river.

Ely is an exquisite little cathedral city. The Tourist Information Centre is housed in Oliver Cromwells House, where he lived with his family, and there is a beautifully regenerated Riverside area. But Ely is dominated by the outstanding Ely Cathedral, which also contains the National Museum of Stained Glass.
