Whitwick (A Guided Walk in Whitwick)

“Whitwick” is a Guided Walk devised and led by Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours, the well known Blue Badge Guide, as part of his year-round programme of walks and Coach Trips.

These strolls are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.

The walk starts outside St. John the Baptist Church, Whitwick’s impressive mediaeval church.

Whitwick, now regarded as a suburb of Coalville, was a prosperous market town in the days before Coalville even existed.

It stands on the boundary between the volcanic rocks of Charnwood Forest and the West Leicestershire coalfield, and the division is easily seen in the valley between them.

On the walk, Colin points out many places of interest, including the site of the castle and a number of streets with eccentric names.

The mediaeval castle, on its prominent hill, was once owned by the Comyn family, who had an important role in Scottish history, and later by the Talbots.

The odd names of streets, along which the route progresses, include the City of Dan and City of Three Waters.
